Essential Drug List

World Health Organization (WHO) defined Essential Drug List (EDL) as " Those drugs that satisfy the health care needs of the majority of the population.They should therefore be available at all times in adequate amount and in appropriate dosage forms and at a price community can afford".

Essential Drug List needs to be Country or State specific addressing the diseases burden of the nation or state and the community uses the medicine at Primary,Secondary and Tertiary Health care facility.The Government of India (GOI) ,MoHFW is mandated to ensure the quality health care system by assuring availabilty of safe and effective medicines for its population.The state of Meghalaya has prepared the State EDL in collaboration with the Specialists and District officials and taking guidance from IPHS Standard for PHC ,CHC & DH and also NLEM 2003 (National List of Essential Medicines)
